Talk all week had been all about the importance of this game
with the long history between Carterton and Greytown as well as the
Nunn Shield and Grant Cup being up for grabs.
While the morning had been sunny and dry, a southerly swept in
right on game time this meant that the result was always going to
be decided in the forwards with heavy rain and a strong wind
heading down the ground. Right from the start Carterton exerted
pressure whenever possible and were soon leading nine nil through
three Jono Hurley penalties. The forwards continued to push forward
at all opportunities and before long a driving maul resulted in
Tomasi Kedrabuka crossing over for the try wide out. The try was
converted by Jono Hurley. Sixteen nil at half time and
turning around with the wind to our backs.
Early into the second half and Greytown converted a penalty, but
this was soon matched with a further two from Jono Hurley to bring
the score to twenty two to three. From an attacking move in
Greytown's twenty two from Carterton mid-way through the second
half, the ball was dropped and a kick hacked down field by the
Greytown fullback, he then had the pace to out run the cover
defence and score wide out. The try was not converted. Final score
twenty two to eight.
Fourth win a row for the team and as well as valuable
competition points the Nunn Shield is safe for another week as well
as securing the Grant Cup off Greytown. Still more work to do by
the team, but the results continue to come.
