Martinborough at home is always a difficult assignment and this
game was no different. For the third week in a row we have trained
well and warmed up well only to be flat as we took the field. The
slow start resulted in Martinborough being successful with two
penalties in the first twenty minutes and ten at the thirty minute
mark a rolling maul resulted in Martinborough crossing over for a
try wide out which was not converted. The first half ended with
Martinborough again being successful with a penalty. Half-time
score was 14 - 0 to Martinborough. Although down by these points,
it was felt that Martinborough were not doing much on the attack
and it would only take focus in midfield defence and to spin the
ball wide for Carterton to be successful. The Martinborough team
appeared to have put all their energy into the first half and their
fitness levels looked to be almost spent.
This observation proved to be correct as after only five minutes
of the second half the ball was sent wide and Lance Stevenson
crossed over for the first try. This was converted by Jono Hurley.
At the sixty minute mark, the ball once again was sent wide and
this time it was Charlie Brown that crossed wide out and with the
conversion missing, the score was 14 - 12 to Martinborough. The
rest of the half had Martinborough pressed back on defence and
Carterton pushing for the winning points. With two minutes to go
Carterton were awarded with a scum on the Martinborough twenty two
metre line and Jono Hurley poised to attempt a drop goal. The
ball from the scrum unfortunately struck the referee which meant
the scrum had to be re-set but by now Martinborough were aware of
the drop goal attempt. From the scrum the ball went to Jono Hurley
and the Martinborough defence rushed up only to leave a huge gap in
their backline which Tommy Harmon moved through at pace onto the
pass. The resulting try beside the posts was converted by Tipene
Haira for Carterton to secure the win 19 to 14.
