Martinborough at home is always a difficult assignment and this
game was no different. The game was played under sunny hot
conditions and after 10 minutes Carterton were ahead 3 - 0 via a
penalty from Jono Hurley. Although Carterton appeared to have the
upper hand for a sustained period, there didn't seem to be any real
game plan that was going to construct points. At the 20 minute
stage Martinborough tied the game up with a penalty. Again
Carterton were placing all the pressure on the Martinborough
defence ant on the half hour Tomasi Kedrabuka broke through the
defence with one of his typical bullocking runs resulting in a try.
From the kick off Carterton were again on attack and right on half
time were awarded a penalty which Jono stroked through the posts
for a 11 - 3 lead. This is where the half should have ended as
there was only enough time for the kick off and the ball to
be despatched to the sideline before the referee sounded his
whistle. Instead Carterton took the ball from the kick off and
decided to move it wide. From the ruck the ball moved back and the
attempt at getting the ball to the side line was charged down
resulting in a try to Martinborough. Instead of being comfortable
at the half, Carterton found themselves with Martinborough
breathing down their necks 11 - 8.
The second half was very messy with Martinborough applying most
of the pressure. This pressure was lifted when Sam Hull scored wide
out to make the difference 16 - 8, but only five minutes later
Martinborough were allowed to drive through the defence and score
close to the posts. The conversion made the score 16 - 15. Five
minutes to go and Martinborough again went to their strengths and a
rolling maul crashed over to see Martinborough take the lead for
the first time 16 - 22. It looked as though this would be enough to
take the winners points along with the silverware that was on
display. The eighty minute mark came and with two minutes of injury
time played, Carterton were awarded a penalty on halfway. The kick
for touch saw them within striking distance. The referee have
signalled that the play from the lineout would be the last of the
game. From the lineout the ball was moved by a series of rucks
across the ground and then in one final effort it was given to the
backs. With Jono Hurley's entry into the backline an overlap was
created and Carterton was always going to score wide out, but
incredibly the Martinborough defence rushed up out of the line and
a huge gap appeared for Jono to slide through and score under the
posts. The conversion was a formality and Carterton found
themselves victors by 23 - 22.
