As was the case last year, another wet day greeted old timers'
day meaning that the ground was soft under foot.
For the first time in a couple of weeks Carterton started the
game at pace and within the first fifteen minutes were awarded a
try to Joe Harwood after a good rolling maul saw the forwards crash
over wide out. Two penalties to Masterton Red Star in the next
fifteen minutes saw them leading six points to five. A penalty to
Jono Hurley on the stroke of half time saw Carterton ahead eight
points to six.
The second half again started well and a penalty from Jono
Hurley extended the lead. A kick through from Jono Hurley saw the
extreme pace of Charlie Brown doting down wide out at the fifty
minute mark to set up a sixteen to six lead. This lead was
shorten by a penalty to Stars, but Carterton were soon back
on the attack and from a scrum twenty two metres out, Brock Price
received the ball at pace and darted down the blindside to score in
the corner. Twenty one to nine soon became twenty eight to nine
when in a reply of his earlier try, Charlie Brown swept down on a
kick and scored which was converted by Tipene Haira. Two minutes
from the end Stars got their consolation try to make the final
score twenty eight to fourteen.
A comprehensive win to Carterton against a team that sat at the
top of the table with them.
Player of the day points went to:
1 point to Charlie Brown
2 points to Johnie McFadzean
3 points to Jono Hurley
